How to Make Your Own DIY Bath Bombs

Making your own bath bombs is a wonderfully fun and rewarding activity. You can play around with different shapes, scents, and color combinations. Stockpile them for indulgent baths on your self-care Sundays or package them up as thoughtful gifts. Read on for our easy bath bomb recipe.

DIY bath bomb recipe: Ingredients

The key to an excitingly effervescent bath bomb is citric acid. The combination of the citric acid and the baking soda in water is what makes that delightful fizzing effect! More than likely, you have the rest of the ingredients that you will need to make DIY bath bombs in your pantry already. If not, they are easy to find at the supermarket or online.

  • 1 cup baking soda (bicarbonate of soda)
  • ½ cup citric acid
  • ½ cup Epsom salts
  • ½ cup cornstarch
  • ¾ tablespoon water
  • 2 teaspoons of essential oil (think lavender, citrus, or rose geranium)
  • 2 teaspoons oil (olive oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, or sweet almond oil work well)
  • Mica powder or a few drops of food coloring (optional)

DIY bath bomb recipe: Method

Now that you have all your ingredients ready, let’s start making your DIY bath bombs! It is a super easy process:

  1. Except for the citric acid, measure all your dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl.
  2. Measure all your wet ingredients into a smaller mixing bowl.
  3. If using mica powder as your color, add it to the dry ingredients. Using liquid food coloring? Whisk it in with the wet ingredients.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix the ingredients until you have a consistency that looks like damp sand.
  5. Add in the citric acid. You might notice some fizzing activity at this stage. It is quite normal, so don’t stress.
  6. Pack the bath bomb mixture into your molds. If you don’t have bath bomb molds, you can use small or medium muffin tins, cake pop molds, or candy pans. Press down hard to make the bath bomb firm and dense.
  7. Leave to dry for a day or two.
  8. Remove the bath bombs from their molds, wrap them up in baking paper or store them in an airtight jar.
