Ice cream in a bag: recipe ingredients

What do you need to make ice cream in a bag? It is really quite simple. You only need five ingredients.

  • 1 cup half and half, or a combination of whole milk and cream.
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Ice
  • ¼ cup of salt.
  • 3 Ziploc bags; 1 large and 2 small

The type of salt that you use doesn’t matter. However, the coarser the salt is the less likelihood of some salt getting into your DIY ice cream and making it taste salty.

For extra creamy ice cream, you can use only cream. For a dairy-free version, use nut milk or coconut cream instead.

  4. Half fill the large Ziploc bag with ice and add the ¼ cup of salt.
  5. Place the small bag inside the large bag. If there is still some space, add more ice.
  6. Seal the bag nice and tight.
  7. Now it is time to shake your mixture in the ice bag until it turns into ice cream. If you are doing this with your kids, everyone can take turns shaking the bag until their hands are too cold. Alternatively, don a pair of oven gloves to protect your hands from the icy cold!
